Let's talk Sex

  • If Rob Bell is even partly correct: "For many, sexuality is simply what happens between two people involving physical pleasure. But that's only a small percentage of what sexuality is. Our sexuality is all the ways we strive to reconnect with our world, with each other, and with God." (Rob Bell, "Sex God," p. 42)...
  • If other thinkers are at all accurate in suggesting that all sex is tied to desiring to control, vanquish, or hasten death..
  • If Foer's delightful phrase for group sectarianinism,"the pornography of sects," holds any weight; and his thesis on sects as inevitably sexual holds any water..
  • If Baile is spot on is recognizing the inherent sexuality of Zionism, and indeed of all nationalistic self-defense..
  • If Aberlove has a point that the most well-intentioned pastor/evangelist is part seducer..
  • If Bono and the rabbis are serious about elevation prayer starting at sexuality..
  • If I am not off my rocker or on drugs (Viagara?) to suggest here that much of our missional outreach is sexualized conquest...
  • And if the great theologian Clancey is right again about the real reason we go to the beach...
  • If the articles on "Of Course Oral Sex is Biblical" are biblical...
  • If cartoon #4 here is your desire (it's a safe click)

>THEN it must be time to find a place to actually talk about sex...in church. Better yet, as church!
(And I don't mean in the cheesy, dualistic, fundies in their undies way..)

As Bell quips:
"Where do you WANT people to talk about it?"

Any alternative discussion, Bell suggests, tunes into “the voice of despair. It’s the voice that asks, ‘Aren’t we all really just animals?’”
