"culture can be far more powerful than scripture."

Graceshaker (the Holy Wildman) spoketh well in a great blog:

"culture can be far more powerful than scripture."

...why do i say
culture can be far more powerful than scripture? bc in the lives of people all over the world culture dictates how they approach and understand scripture. and whether we like to admit this or not even here in america our culture has a powerful if subtle influence on how we understand scripture...

culture is pervasive and powerful and all too often we have but one culturally tainted lense thru which we view scripture.

100 years ago in america you would not have found the ecclesiology we find today. megachurches were practically unheard of. and the ceo pastor-model had yet to be incorporated into our hermeneutic. yet now the culture of megachurches and having a ceo with a board of directors has become a predominant structure of church government in evangelical churches. theres not a shred of evidence for this ecclesiology in scripture unless you view scripture thru a 20th century busniess-model lense. as culture shifts and changes so too do our perceptions.

culture influences our understanding. this is not to say its right or wrong - i actually believe in the galatians 5 passage presented above both interpretations may be correct. but to think that scripture somehow stands
outside and above culture is to imagine scripture as a book that fell intact from the heavens. this is simply not the case. in fact - it was given thru culture.

i hope this is making some sense of what i meant when i made the statement. ultimately i believe that it isnt scripture but christ that is above culture and that he incarnated for the purpose of transforming culture. i believe that in following him this is our role as well - incarnational transformation of culture.
