The pope's second big interview (see excerpt here, and RNS response here) is intriguing for several reasons.
One, it's with a skeptic. That should be be considered when reading quotes out of context. The pope is more pastor than evangelist. At times, though, it reminds. of Bono's famous C.S. Lewis-esque interview with Assayas , in that it is quite aplogetic/persuasive..but in a humble, relational way. One writer complains that the pope's line " Proselytism is solemn nonsense, it makes no sense. We need to get to know each other, listen to each other and improve our knowledge of the world around us.” But the pope didn't say "evangelism," he said " Proselytism'!
The complaints against what has been called by that same Protestant a "theological train wreck" (article here) of the pope's comments might be tempered with the "quantum" view of the pope that John Raines has proffered.
