A wonderful, prophetic and funny film..
which works on many levels (It's a spoof of Star Trek and Trekkies, and a legitmate sci fi film at the same time);
and thus is misunderstood at many levels.
The cast of a popular but cancelled "Star Trek" like show, going through the routine convention appearances, are drafted by real aliens to save their planet; aliens who have no capacity for "lying" (acting), and so when they discover the space show's "transmissions" or "historical documents" (broadcast rereuns), of course they believe the cast is truly the officers of a real ship.
Among the many implications for doing church:
going through the motions as a cast vs. reality; rising up to do the impossible; cultivating organic teamwork among a diverse staff, role of the pastor/apostle/flight commander; use of irony as prophetic, etc etc
It's "Galaxy Quest". Wikipedia summary here for orientation,
and scenes below:

Galaxy Quest. The movie keeps coming back into vogue, deservedly so.
ReplyDeletePeople will follow a leader a long time, but they will actually do something if the leader understands that everyone has a role in a group and being a dictator simply won't work.
